Celebrating Laura, Jim’s Mom

We have been blessed the past two Christmases to have Jim’s mom spend the Holiday with us.  After Grandpa passed away in 2007, we flew Grandma to Dallas were we celebrated with all of our kids and grand-kids.  This past Christmas we had her come to Colorado where we gathered with Ali and Chris.

We have spent many Christmases with mom and dad.  In the first years of our marriage those Christmases were spent in Idaho.  They came to spend time with us as we moved around the country to Arizona, Ohio or Colorado.  Our kids have such wonderful memories of those most anticipated visits from their grandparents.  Because we were so far apart, the visits were usually a week or two long.  They came in winter and in summer. We made the best use of the time we had together.  We visited area attractions and they got to visit places that they may not have had a reason or an opportunity to visit.  When we moved to Ohio they drove with us across the country and then stayed for several days while we got settled . That trip is one of Mom and Dad’s favorite memories.  In subsequent visits we went  to Kirtland Temple, visited Amish Country, the Air Force Museum and so many other places that it is hard  to remember.  Dad loved the museum and for the first time ever, that I could recall, he talked about his experience during the war.

The kids loved the visits from their grandparents and spent days getting ready for them.  In the mornings, the younger ones would climb into bed with them and just have a good time.  It was a magical time for them.

After grandpa passed away Ali slept with Grandma, she held her and talked to her until they were so tired that they finally went to sleep.  In every visit since then they have done the same.  Grandma calls Ali her  bed buddy.

In early June, Mom was diagnosed with Colon Cancer.  After undergoing surgery last month, we got the great news last Friday, that her cancer was at a stage 1.  We are all so grateful to know that she is OK and that she won’t have to undergo any more treatment.  Can’t wait to see her this weekend and celebrate the good news and her 85th Birthday with her.

About jfinlayson51
I live in Colorado. I was born in Honduras. Jim and I have been married 32 yrs. and are the parents of three daughters and one son. We have five grandchildren. We have lived all over the Country and have travel across the continental US from coast to coast and border to border and beyond in both directions. We love to dance and have done it for about 20yrs. We still dance a couple of times a week. It keeps our marriage fresh and adds a bit of romance to the equation! We enjoy some kind of physical activity almost every day of the week, be it the gym, a walk, dancing or the occasional hike. We travel a lot and like it. I love to read, cook nice meals and try new recipes. Trying new foods is one of my favorite things to do. Being with my husband and our family means the most to me. Our favorite place to be: On the Beach!!!!!!!

Special, special memories!! Sometimes we take things for granted when they are right here so close, but learn to savor them more when we are so far away. So glad you guys were able to be at the hospital with Julie and I. Without family, what have we got? love you sis!

Mom that was so sweet and so true. We have such special memories of our time with our grandparents. We treasured any time we got together and missed them terribly when they were away. I still feel that way as an adult. I just love grandma and how she is so easy to talk to, she is fun to be with and always amazes me.

Please give her lots of loves for me, I really wish we could be going out there with you to celebrate her 85th!!! Love you
    Mandy

Mom what a wonderful message about grandma and grandpa. Those trips were so wonderful when they would come and see us, I can still remember playing in the garage on days they were coming so that Chris and I would be the first to see them pull in, (and of course dig for jerkey and sugar cookies once we got our hugs).

The conversations that grandma and I have had in those early hours of the morning will never be forgotten and will always be cherished. She is such an inspiration to us all and I only hope to be even half of the wonderful person that she is.
